Court of Master Sommeliers - Certified
The Certified Sommelier qualification is the primary certification for wine and beverage professionals in the Hospitality Industry and is intended to provide a meaningful qualification for the working Sommelier. The examination will recognize beverage professionals whose knowledge, skills and demeanor are worthy of the title – Certified Sommelier.
The pre-requisite for the examination is the Court of Master Sommeliers Introductory Sommelier Certificate. Candidates who wish to take the Certified Sommelier Certificate must do so within three years of passing the Introductory Certificate.

About the Court of Master Sommeliers certification
Only 274 people in the world hold the prestigious title Master Sommelier. Norsk Sommelier Utdannelse (NSU) is currently the only course provider in Norway, to offer the Court of Master Sommeliers (CoMS) certification. NSU offers stages 1 and 2 out of the 4 CoMS certification stages:
Introductory Sommelier Certificate: the course is run over two days with the examinations held on the morning of the third day.
Certified Sommelier Examination: a one-day exam.

Certified Sommelier Examination – 1 Day
The objectives of the Certified Sommelier qualification:
- To create a minimum standard of service and knowledge for the Hospitality Industry.
- To provide successful candidates with credentials to show employers their skills have been evaluated at a high level of proficiency by the leading authority on beverage service – the Internationally recognized Court of Master Sommeliers Worldwide.
- To create a certification that provides all successful candidates with a sense of accomplishment while providing the most dedicated students an opportunity to further their education and skills at the Advanced and Masters levels.
The Certified Sommelier Examination comprises three parts:
- Short written theory paper of 40 multiple choice and short answer questions.
- Tasting test consisting of two wines tasted blind, and answered on a Tasting Grid. (Click to download the Tasting grid and Instructions)
- Practical service test.
The pass mark is 60% in each section. All three sections must be passed together. The theory paper is at a higher level than the Introductory Sommelier Certificate exam.

Cancellation policy
Cancellation of course registration must be in writing and submitted to post@vinkelneren.no.
If you cancel your course registration, regardless of reason, a NOK 3000 cancellation fee applies per student. Cancellation within 6 to 4 weeks before the first course date, 50 % of the course or examination fee will be charged per student. Cancellation within 4 weeks of the first course date, the full course and examinations fee must be paid.
Course cancellation
In case of too few registrations, Norsk Sommelier Utdannelse can cancel courses up to 4 weeks before the first course date (this happens very rarely). In case of cancellation, course and examination fees will be refunded immediately.
